A UN correspondent calls on the EU to suspend economic agreements with Israel

The UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, called on the EU to “suspend” its economic agreement with Israel after the International Court of Justice recognized the risk of Tel Aviv committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

“The EU is Israel's largest trading partner, representing 30% of its merchandise trade,” Albanese said on the “X” platform on Friday.

He pointed out that article two of the economic agreement between the EU and Israel stipulates “respect for human rights”.

He said the International Court of Justice's recognition of the risk of Israel committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip “obliges the EU to suspend the agreement.”

The UN correspondent attached to the post a link to the details of the agreement on the EU Commission website, which entered into force in June 2000.

On January 26, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop genocide against Palestinians and take measures to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

On 11 and 12 January, the International Court of Justice in The Hague held two public hearings as the beginning of consideration of a lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel on charges of committing “genocide crimes” against Palestinians in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which as of Friday had led to 27,131 martyrs and 66,287 wounded, most of them children and women, and massive destruction, according to Palestinian officials. According to the United Nations, an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.
