Martyr Mahmoud Fares…pioneer of drone manufacturing in Al-Qassam Brigade

A Palestinian engineer from Gaza City, born in 1983. In 2007, he joined the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), and was one of the main engineers building drones. He created the first chassis for the “Ababil Aircraft” and designed the “Zauri” and “Shahab” aircraft. The Falange called him the “Knight of Heaven”. He was killed by Israel during the Battle of Saif al-Quds in 2021.

Mahmoud Muhammad Fares was born on June 10, 1983, in Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, in Palestine, into a humble family that raised its children to love God and make sacrifices to liberate the homeland .

study and training

He received his early education in Gaza City, and after high school he received a scholarship at the beginning of the Second Intifada in Syria, where he studied mechanical engineering in Latakia, and obtained first rank in his specialization.

He was one of the most prominent leaders of Palestinian student action in Syria. After graduating, he joined the Al-Qassam Brigades and received training courses in drone manufacturing in several Arab countries.

Fares joined the Hamas movement while he was a student at Latakia University in Syria, and has a prominent presence in Palestinian student affairs.

In 2005, the Hamas Military Affairs Department abroad began a project to create drones, and began organizing minds capable of realizing the dream. Engineer Fares was foremost among the minds who believed in the project and gave it his time and effort.

After his graduation, he joined the Al-Qassam Brigades, and received training courses in drone manufacturing in several Arab countries. He was trained by the martyr, engineer Muhammad al-Zawari, who was responsible for the unit for the development and manufacturing of drones. Apart from the martyr Juma al-Tahla.

He returned to Gaza in 2010, transferring the experience and expertise he had accumulated to complete the project of manufacturing and developing drones. He took over efforts to develop drones after the Battle of the “Shell Stones” in 2012, and he continued his work. The project was worked on until it resulted in the launch of the “Ababil” aircraft, which was used in combat for the first time by the Qassam Brigade. In 2014 “Devouring Storm” surprised the audience and its intelligence.

In addition to missile engines, Fars also developed “Shahab” and “Zouri” aircraft. They worked to develop Al-Qassam military manufacturing, and in addition to transferring training and expertise to members of the military industrialization unit in the Al-Qassam Brigade, were able to leave their mark on every march that flew in the skies of occupation .


Israeli military aircraft targeted one of the manufacturing workshops in the battle of “The Eating Storm”, attempting to assassinate Fares, but he survived the attempt. They also targeted his home in Khan Yunis and he survived the second time, until the capture was able to kill him in the battle of “Saif al-Quds” along with Rifqa on May 12, 2021.
