Watch.. Iran beats Syria in penalty shootout and qualifies for Asian Cup quarter-finals


Iran, who fell behind during extra time, reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Football Cup held in Qatar after beating Syria 5-3 on penalties (1-1 in regular and extra time) at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium on Wednesday.

Iran opened the scoring with a penalty kick by Mehdi Taremi (34th), and Syria equalized with a penalty kick by Omar Khribin in the 64th minute.

In the penalty shootout, Iranian players scored on all five of their attempts, while Syria's Fahad Al-Yousef was unsuccessful.

Iran, which is trying to win its fourth title and first since 1976, will next face Japan in the quarter-finals on Saturday, having beaten Bahrain 3-1 at the Education City Stadium on Wednesday.
