The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi sees signs of progress regarding the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant facilities, according to his statements to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
The Zaporizhia station, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, was seized by the Russian military in March 2022, a few days after the start of the invasion of Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev have blamed each other for attacks around the nuclear plant’s facilities, and the IAEA is scrambling to put in place safety measures to prevent a potentially disastrous accident.
“So far we have seen some progress, but the situation remains extremely fragile,” Rafael Grossi told RIA, noting that no bombing of the nuclear plant’s facilities has come to the attention of the IAEA. “However, I weigh my words carefully,” he added.
Rafael Grossi also said that on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, he intends to meet delegations of Russia and Ukraine to discuss the issue of security around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
