The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has said that his country supports Azerbaijan in “steps to preserve territorial integrity”.
He made these statements in the General Assembly of the United Nations.
“Nagorno-Karabakh is in the territory of Azerbaijan,” Erdogan said, adding that no other status “will ever be accepted.”
According to him, Armenia should fulfill its promises, including the opening of the transport corridor in the south.
The Turkish leader has also called for a quick solution to the hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
In 2020, Turkey has helped Azerbaijan regain territories lost from Karabakh in the 1990 war with Armenia over the region.
An Armenian separatist human rights official said 25 people died in the region on Tuesday as a result of the military offensive launched by Azerbaijan.
Two of the dead were said to be civilians, while at least 138 other people were injured.
Azerbaijan has sent military troops to Karabakh, for what it has called “operation against terrorism”.
Although Azerbaijan has said that the operation is limited to military targets only, the Ministry of Defense has said that “humanitarian corridors” have been created to evacuate the population.
Armenian defense officials in the breakaway region have said that the Azerbaijani army has violated “the ceasefire on the contact lines through rocket attacks”.
Other representatives of Karabakh have mentioned “large-scale military offensives”.
Armenia has been allied with Russia for a long time, although it has recently irritated Moscow after the exercises it has conducted with the United States./ REL
