The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that the number of victims of floods in the Libyan city of Derna has risen to more than 11,000, while efforts to search for missing persons continue.
The office confirmed, according to media reports on Sunday, that the floods claimed the lives of 11,300 people, while the number of missing persons reached 10,100. The office added that 170 people were killed in other places in eastern Libya outside the city of Derna, and that the number of displaced people in northeastern Libya rose to about 40,000.
It is noteworthy that unprecedented torrents and floods struck the eastern region of Libya last Sunday as a result of Hurricane “Daniel,” which struck the cities of “Al-Bayda,” “Derna,” “Al-Marj,” “Tobruk,” “Takanis,” “Al-Bayyada,” “Batta,” and all the cities. And the villages of “Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar” and “the eastern coast, all the way to Benghazi, which left thousands of victims and massive destruction to infrastructure and property. The Libyan authorities declared all municipalities that were exposed to torrents and floods “disaster areas.”
