Gabon’s interim president, Brice Cloutier Oligoi Nguema, said that the military decided to take control of matters due to President Ali Bongo’s illness and his quest to assume the presidency for a third term, in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde.
General Nguema, who was appointed yesterday, Wednesday, as the country’s interim president, told the newspaper that Bongo did not have the right to assume the presidency for a third term.
He explained: Everyone is talking about this matter, but no one takes responsibility, referring to Bongo’s disease.
He added: The constitution was violated, and the election method itself was not good, so the army decided to change the page to carry out its responsibilities.
Yesterday morning, Wednesday morning, soldiers in the Gabon army announced the seizure of power, the cancellation of the election results, and the dissolution of state institutions.
The military imposed house arrest on the country’s president, Bongo, after announcing that he had won a third presidential term.
