The Minister of Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka has given a statement to the media after Albania takes the second Presidency of the Security Council at the UN on September 1.
Xhaçka stated that taking the Presidency comes at a difficult moment, when the world is facing a series of serious crises.
She stated that the Presidency of the Security Council gives Albania the opportunity to determine which crisis situations receive the special attention of the Security Council.
“Assuming the Presidency comes at a difficult moment, when the world faces a series of serious crises. The Presidency of the SC gives us the opportunity to determine which crisis situations receive the special attention of the SC. Albania has accumulated during the last 20 months an experience brought to the SC table. The successful performance we had during this mandate gives us an advantage in the eyes of our allies and partners. There are two important moments of this Presidency.
It is a cooperation platform that guarantees the distribution of humanitarian aid anywhere in the world, in times of crisis. What enables large businesses to offer their contribution, in addition to the existing mechanisms of humanitarian aid. This improves and accelerates the way in which these aid and contributions are distributed.
This innovative initiative comes to the aid of corporations and large businesses, facilitating their humanitarian contribution. The idea has been well received and has found support from actors and interest groups. The credit goes to our country as one of the initiators that brought it to the attention of KS.
Another landmark activity of our presidency is dedicated to the illegal Russian aggression against Ukraine. As a co-custody holder with the US, this is one of the issues that has marked our mandate. It has made Albania gain the respect and admiration of its partners and allies. We will organize a high level Open Debate in SC.
The debate will focus on the consequences of the illegal Russian aggression against Ukraine. As well as in joint efforts to strengthen multilateralism and respect for international law. Activities and other events will mark September at the UN, even during the week of the Parliamentary Assembly. The activities I presented to you above are definitely the highlights of our Presidency. There are two landmark activities that will leave a mark on the consolidation of our country’s successful performance in the SC”, she said.
