Serbian citizens protested Wednesday in Podgorica and several other Montenegrin municipalities against the formation of a new government by pro-Western leader Milojko Spajic, who received the president’s approval to form a governing coalition.
The head of the “Europe Now” Movement, Milojko Spajic, said that in the new government there will be no representatives of pro-Serbian and pro-Russian political parties.
Protesters blocked the roundabout in the Zlatica neighborhood that connects to Montenegro’s main highway. They carried flags dominated by Serbian symbols, while chanting “treason is not forgiven”.
The police said that the organizers of the protest had not received permission from the relevant authorities and that everything is being observed and even filmed. Meanwhile, the residents blocked by the protest of Serbian citizens have expressed their anger.
The protest of Serbian citizens in Montenegro comes after the statements of officials in Belgrade regarding the non-representation in the new government of the pro-Russian and pro-Serbian parties, which won 13 seats in the Montenegrin parliamentary elections.
The pro-Western leader, Milojko Spajic, who has held talks with the parties that won seats in the parliament, said that the “Europe Now” list has received the necessary support for the formation of the new government in the country.
“The coalition will form a joint government that will fulfill all the programs promised during the election campaign,” said Mr. Spajic to the media in Montenegro. He said that the pro-Serbian and pro-Russian parties will not be part of the government, since, as he said, they do not enjoy the proper trust.
The European Union has called on the political parties in Montenegro to form the new parliament and government as soon as possible, with the aim of accelerating the necessary reforms towards the European Union.
The “Europe Now” movement, formed a year ago, won 24 seats in the parliament in the elections held on June 11. Behind her is the coalition led by the Democratic Party of Socialists, of former President Milo Djukanović./ VOA
