On Wednesday, the coup leaders in Gabon announced the appointment of the Commander of the Republican Guard, General Brice Olighe Nguema, as President of the transitional period.
A group of senior army officers in Gabon appeared on television in the early hours of Wednesday morning, announcing their seizure of power shortly after the election center announced that President Ali Bongo had won a third term with 64.27 percent of the votes.
The coup plotters decided to place the deposed president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, “under house arrest,” surrounded by his family and doctors, while one of his sons was arrested on charges of “high treason.” Later, Bongo appeared in a video in which he called on his “friends” to take action.
