The United States announced on August 29 a new military aid pact for Ukraine that includes $250 million worth of ammunition, missiles and other aid to Kiev.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that the new package includes demining equipment, anti-aircraft missiles, artillery ammunition, High Mobility Artillery Missile Systems (HIMARS), and over 3 million rounds for small arms.
“The United States, our allies and partners will stand together with Ukraine for as long as necessary,” Blinken said.
The aid package was financed through funds previously approved by the US Congress.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year, the US has sent over $43 billion in military aid to Ukraine. US President Joe Biden earlier this month asked Congress to approve an additional $24 billion in aid.
Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have supported aid to Ukraine, but some right-wing Republicans want to cut aid.
Ukrainian troops launched a counteroffensive in the east and south of the country in June, but have made slow progress southward because large areas have been mined by Russian forces./ REL
