A bomb planted inside Yevgeny Prigozhin’s jet air conditioner. This is the latest hypothesis, formulated by the Russian daily Moskovsky Komsomolets, on the causes that led to the crash of the Wagner head’s private plane in the Tver region, between Moscow and St. Petersburg. According to what is reconstructed by the newspaper, a bomb may have been placed in the device, which was replaced due to a defect on August 19.
Everything would therefore be related to a failure in the system that regulated the air conditioning of the plane, explains “Corriere della Sera”. After the problem, which dates back to July 18, a replacement plane would have been called for and the plane would have been grounded for weeks near Moscow at Sheremetyevo Airport. At that point the opportunity would arise to plant the bomb in the new air conditioner.
The habits of a man in constant danger
Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets explains that Wagner’s boss changed his plans at the last minute, modifying his schedule for work reasons, but above all for his personal safety. That trip to St. Petersburg was supposed to take place on the 20th, but the flight was pushed back to the 23rd. Then there were changes to the schedule and the passenger list, from three to seven. All normal for a character like Prigozhin, who was engaged in negotiations with rivals and was therefore in constant danger.
Visit of two hypothetical buyers
However, the decision to show the plane, an Embraer, to two prospective buyers, Alexandra Yulina and Sergey Klokotov, heads of the Rusjet company, raises more suspicions, who boarded the plane after handing over their passports, a normal practice in these cases, in setting the date of August 23 (it was set for the 19th, but it was postponed precisely because of the repair of the air conditioner).
The highly reliable Natalia Minibayeva, who had been at Prigozhin’s side for eight years, managed the situation. Pilot Rustam Karimov was also present during the visit. If no one noticed suspicious activity in that case, nothing is known about the moments after, before takeoff. In addition to the hypothesis of the air conditioner, there is also that of a bomb placed near the wing.
Silence at funerals and burials
And while in Moscow tributes are paid to Wagner’s head at many memorials in the city, there is silence about Prigozhin’s funeral and burial. A Telegram channel near the security services writes that the ceremony may be held behind closed doors on Tuesday, August 29 in St. Petersburg. There had been various proposals, almost all related to a funeral in the occupied countries: Bakhmout was especially talked about. But it seems that the authorities are trying to ensure that the final farewell for Prigozhin does not turn into an event in support of mercenaries, and therefore a private function would have been chosen. Nothing is known about the burial either, which is suspected to be in a place of worship. So everything remains shrouded in mystery.
