Pediatrician Valbona Shahinaj, invited to the studio of the column “Opinion” on News24, talked about seasonal viruses.
Shahinaj said that during this period two viruses are circulating, one of them is associated with high temperatures, sore throat and cough, while the other with lower temperatures, vomiting and diarrhea. He further appealed to all age groups that if the temperatures are high and last more than 24 hours, they should go to the doctor.
“There are 2 viruses in circulation. One presents with a high temperature, but it is worth noting that the duration is 2-3 days. The other presents with milder temperatures, up to 38 degrees Celsius, with vomiting and diarrhea. If we have an aggressive fever, we must see a doctor, at least on the second day. This has signs like sore throat, cough.
The antibiotic is for bacterial cases, when they are viral it does nothing. It would even lead to a worsening of the situation. We see this condition both in young patients, as well as in adults or the elderly. We emphasize that viruses are contagious, depending on physical proximity. If there is a high temperature, ibuprofen should be consumed, as it has a faster effect, unlike paracetamol. If the temperature does not drop, you should go to the doctor.
If we compare it with last year, there was an increased number of viruses due to high temperatures. All ages are affected”, said Shahinaj.
