Andreu Camps, the general secretary of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), sent a letter to UEFA last Friday to denounce the Spanish government for interference, according to Onda Cero and AS, who were able to confirm the news. .
The appeal was made after the Supreme Sports Council (CSD) announced it would refer Rubiales’ case to the Sports Administrative Court (TAD), even before FIFA itself temporarily suspended Rubiales as RFEF president.
As AS has learned, UEFA has received the letter, but has decided not to take any decision or action. Rubiales’ right-hand man’s letter was sent, therefore, before Pedro Rocha was appointed head of the RFEF.
The issue will be addressed today in the Commission of the Chairmen of the Federations of the Autonomous and Territorial Scope. As AS has learned, Pedro Rocha found out about the complaint through information published in the press.
It must now decide whether to maintain the appeal or withdraw it. It happens that UEFA does not have the power to impose any kind of sanction on Spanish football for “government interference”. FIFA has it, so Camps and the RFEF are maneuvering before UEFA to mediate with the highest body in international football.
The appeal, if successful and in the most extreme cases, could lead to the suspension of the RFEF by UEFA, something that would mean the exclusion of clubs and national teams from the various competitions organized by UEFA: the European Championship, the Champions League, “Europa League”…
According to UEFA’s statutes, its associations “shall manage their affairs independently and without undue influence from third parties. Any decision of a body that has not been elected or appointed in accordance with the mentioned procedure, even temporarily, will not be recognized by UEFA”. So far, UEFA has not made any public statement on the Rubiales case.
