Moscow has declared today that it launched two warplanes into the air to intercept two American surveillance drones near Crimea. The Russian Ministry of Defense wrote on Telegram on August 28 that it mobilized the two planes after “a flight in the direction of the Russian state border was detected.”
According to the Russian ministry, the two American drones, one Reaper and the other Global Hawk, were “carrying out an observation mission in the region of the Crimean Peninsula” near the Black Sea.
Moscow illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.
After the arrival of the Russian aircraft, the drones “changed the direction of flight and left the area where they were performing the observation mission”, the announcement of the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
Incidents involving Russian aircraft and American drones have increased in recent months.
On August 27, Russia said it had launched a fighter jet to prevent a US military surveillance drone from crossing its borders over the Black Sea./ REL
