“Racial hatred” was what drove a gunman to kill three African-Americans at a Jacksonville, Florida store and then kill himself, Sheriff T.K. Waters.
“He hated black people,” the sheriff of Jacksonville said of the perpetrator of yesterday’s attack in Florida’s most populous city. She described him as a “white male, around 20 years old”, without naming him, believing he acted alone. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and was armed with a Glock pistol and an AR-15-style rifle emblazoned with swastikas, it said. He had written “several manifestos” to the media, his parents and the police, in which he expressed his hatred of black people.
“Race-motivated hate crimes are a top priority for the FBI,” said Special Agent Sherry Onks, explaining that they are intended to threaten and intimidate an entire community.
