Kirsten revealed many unknown aspects of the coaching career recently in ‘The Final Word Cricket Podcast’ program on YouTube. The World Cup-winning coach told the Australian journalist Adam Collins, the organizer of the program, ‘After taking charge of the Indian team, many defects have been seen. At that time it seemed important to me to know and understand each player. Whether they will be able to adapt themselves to the team or not, whether they will be able to play cricket happily or not – these things have also to be thought about.’
Sachin Tendulkar and Karsten can be called contemporary cricketers. Tendulkar was in mid-career when Kirsten retired in 2004. It was Tendulkar who wanted to retire after India’s exit from the 2007 ODI World Cup with losses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Kirsten tried to convince him, but the ‘ghost of retirement’ did not want to get rid of anything.
