The Mriya was built by the then Soviet Antonov, which was based in Kyiv. Its purpose was to carry Buran, the space shuttle of the then Soviet Union. The aircraft was designed in a similar fashion to NASA’s adaptation of the Boeing 747 to carry its own space shuttle. The end of the Soviet Union a few years later put an early end to Mriya’s operation. Many years later, Antonov decided to bring it back as an aircraft for transporting huge objects, either in weight or volume. In 2002 the Mriya returned as a transport aircraft and its first mission was to deliver 200,000 meals, totaling 187 tons (!!!) to US military forces stationed in Turkey.
The Mriya continued to operate, carrying things for the rest of the world that no one thought could be airlifted, until its total destruction in 2022 by Russian forces during the Battle of Hostomel Air Base.
Antonov has announced that it is working with Microsoft and professional modders IniBuilds to bring the aircraft to Microsoft Flight Simulator. We expect Mriya to be available for players to download on February 27, 2023, exactly one year after his destruction. IniBuilds announced that the aircraft will cost €20, with all proceeds going to Antonov and the country of Ukraine.
