London – (dpa):
Two Britons have been killed in Ukraine while trying to carry out a humanitarian evacuation in the east of the country, the British Foreign Office said Tuesday evening.
Chris Barry, 28, and his colleague Andrew Bagshaw, 47, who hold dual British and New Zealand citizenship, were trying to evacuate an elderly woman from Soledar in eastern Ukraine when their car was hit by an artillery shell, Bagshaw’s family said in a statement quoted by the British Guardian newspaper.
The two men were working as volunteers, helping people flee the front lines of the war that Russia started in February.
In an earlier statement, Barry’s family announced “with great sadness” that the two men had been killed. She paid tribute to Chris, saying that his “selfless determination to help the old, the young and the underprivileged out there made us and his extended family very proud”.
