Major General Hisham Amna, Minister of Local Development, held a meeting with Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Local Development.
According to a statement, the meeting witnessed a review of the executive position of the new municipal solid waste system with regard to the ongoing infrastructure projects on the land of the governorates in the three phases of the system, including safe sanitary landfills, fixed and mobile intermediate stations, waste recycling factories, and raising the efficiency of a number of recycling lines in some factories, which contributes to Bringing about an improvement in the level of the cleaning system and restoring the aesthetic appearance of the main and secondary streets in cities, centers, neighborhoods and villages, in order to finally achieve citizens’ satisfaction with the service provided by the state.
The importance of continuous evaluation of the performance of private sector companies operating in the waste system in some governorates was emphasized, in order to preserve the rights of the state in the contracts concluded with these companies, in cooperation between the Ministries of Environment and Local Development.
During the meeting, the executive position of the cleaning system in Cairo governorate was reviewed, and the position of waste-to-energy projects, which will take place in the governorates, on top of which is the project to be established in the Abu Rawash area in Giza Governorate, in strategic partnership with the Military Production Companies Coalition, with investments estimated at about $125 million to maximize the benefit from the waste system. Solid municipality and standing on the transfer and localization of advanced foreign technology in the field of safe disposal of waste, as this project is one of the projects planned to be implemented within 8 projects in 8 governorates during the coming period through Egyptian and foreign private sector companies and alliances.
The meeting also witnessed the ongoing efforts regarding the investment packages stipulated in the investment law to apply them with companies working in the field of integrated waste management, and the introduction of municipal waste recycling factories for the new waste system “construction – management” for the private sector and providing the necessary facilities in this important file to support the direction of The government to create an investment environment in all sectors in accordance with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic.
For his part, Major General Hisham Amna indicated the keenness of the Ministry of Local Development to advance the implementation of the infrastructure projects of the system in the various governorates and to overcome any challenges in this regard, in implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, regarding raising the efficiency of the system and overcoming the problems of waste accumulation and safe disposal of it.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, also confirmed the state’s keenness to support the recycling, treatment and safe disposal of waste, and work to implement a sustainable plan to close random dumps and eliminate accumulations, by establishing a group of new recycling factories, raising the efficiency of existing factories, and establishing landfills and intermediate stations on more than one stage covering All provinces.
