Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal presented the list of the country’s top 20 defaulters in the National Parliament on Tuesday. The Finance Minister presented this information in the National Parliament in response to a question from Awami League Member of Parliament Shahiduzzaman Sarkar. Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury chaired the question and answer session presented at the table. The total amount of loans to these top defaulters is 19 thousand 283 crores 93 lakhs. Out of this amount of defaulted loans is 16 thousand 587 crore 92 lakh taka. The total number of defaulting customers in the country is 7 lakh 86 thousand 65.
According to the Bank Companies Act, if any loan of a group defaults, the entire loan is marked as default. Borrowing opportunities for that group are cut off. Hence the entire loan is considered defaulted.
The analysis of the list showed that besides Awami League leaders, BNP leaders’ organizations are also in the list of top defaulters. Out of 20 defaulting institutions, 10 are from Chittagong. And the top
