Officials of the Matarbari Deep Sea Port Development Project said that the tender for the construction of the terminal was opened last November. Now he is being evaluated. The construction work will start only after the appointment of the contractor. A total of 760 meters long jetty will be constructed at the two terminals. 350 meter long container ships will be gathered at the 460 meter long jetty there. And the 300 meter long jetty will accommodate 200 meter long ordinary ships. The water depth in the waterway is now 16 meters. Using this depth, it will be possible to launch ships with a depth of 14 to 14.5 meters. This terminal for loading and unloading containers and goods from ships will be launched in December 2026.
It is known that before the opening of the Matarbari port, a large ship carrying coal will be docked there next March. The coal-fired power plant will be commissioned next year. Apart from this, the construction of 27 km connecting road from Matarbari terminal to Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway will start under the project from next July-August.
There is no deep sea port in Bangladesh now. As a result, small ships have to be relied upon for the import-export of goods in containers. In the country, the main jetty of Chittagong Port can accommodate a maximum of two thousand single container ships. Large ships capable of transporting 8,000 single containers can enter Matarbari. Now at sea goods are transferred from large containerless ships to smaller ships. Such vessels can be moored at Matarbari jetty. Products that need to be unloaded at the jetty will have the opportunity to redeem at the Matarbari terminal.
