The head of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, confirmed that Russia is facing almost the entire West in the special military operation in Ukraine.
“Modern Russia has never known such a level and intensity of hostilities. Our country and its armed forces today are almost facing the collective West,” Gerasimov was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency Sputnik.
Gerasimov explained that in order to stabilize the situation, protect new territories and carry out offensive operations, the Russian General Staff had to carry out partial mobilization, such events have not happened since the Great Patriotic War.
Gerasimov noted that the General Staff is now taking all measures to achieve the goals of the special operation set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, as well as to ensure the country’s military security, on the basis of existing military threats.
And the Russian Ministry of Defense had announced, earlier, the appointment of the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, as commander of the Russian joint forces group within the framework of the special military operation in Ukraine.
“On January 11, the Russian Defense Minister, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, made new appointments to the command of the special military operation, and the Chief of the General Staff, General of the Army Valery Gerasimov, was appointed commander of the Joint Forces Group,” the ministry’s statement read.
The ministry indicated that Gerasimov’s deputies are the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, General of the Army Sergey Surovkin, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces, General of the Army Oleg Salyukov, and the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Alexei Kim.
