Professor Pran Gopal Dutt introduced a subject called ‘Institutional Practice’ during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). According to that, the senior doctors of the university have to see patients in private chambers in the hospital in the afternoon. However, the doctor himself determines the fee in private chambers. Here the fees are fixed by the university authorities.
This Monday morning, BSMMU treasurer Mohammad Atiqur Rahman told Prothom Alo that professors and associate professors have to take turns to see patients in the outpatient department from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The fee per patient is Tk 200. Out of this, doctors get 135 rupees, and employees get the remaining 65 rupees.
It benefits the patient. A BSMMU doctor has to pay a fee of Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500 to see private clinics or private hospitals in different places of Dhaka including Farmgate, Green Road, Elephant Road. There it takes 200 taka in Shahbagh.
This is ‘institutional practice’. Many countries have it. When Prof. Pran Gopal Dutt introduced it at BSMMU many opposed it, many criticized it. Then Bardem turns it on.
