Incidents of irregularities and resignation of MD in National Bank are not new. Over the past decade and a half, most of the bank’s MDEs have been forced to resign before the end of their tenure. That is why Bangladesh Bank appointed an observer in the bank in 2014. Now a central bank coordinator is working in the bank, but the condition of the bank has not improved. The bank is owned by the Sikdar Group. They are taking various decisions of the bank.
The former governor of Bangladesh Bank Salehuddin Ahmed told Prothom Alo that the lack of good governance and accountability in the bank is proven by the departure of one MD after another. The central bank needs to intervene now in the interest of the depositors. If necessary, the board should be dissolved. There are already major irregularities in some banks, at this time it is not desirable for any MD to leave like this. This will affect the entire sector.
