Berlin / Paris – (AFP):
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed on Sunday that their countries would support Ukraine “as long as necessary” and “consistently” against Russian aggression.
“We will continue to provide all the support that Ukraine needs for as long as it is necessary,” Scholz said during a ceremony at the Sorbonne marking the 60th anniversary of the signing of the reconciliation treaty between Germany and France.
“Together, as Europeans, with the aim of defending our project for European peace,” Schulz added.
Macron, for his part, affirmed the “unwavering support” of the two countries to the Ukrainian people “in all fields”.
“After February 24, our union has not been divided and has not shirked its responsibilities,” Macron added.
The celebration, which took place at the Sorbonne University, aims to show the restored unity between the two countries, after their relationship was strained in recent months due to the repercussions of the war in Ukraine.
The German Chancellor declared that “the future, as the past, depends on the cooperation of our two countries as an engine for a united Europe,” describing the “Franco-German engine” as a “settlement mechanism” that allows “transforming differences and disparate interests into convergent action.”
