Ujjwal said that he became interested in working to protect his own language and culture after seeing his father. From that thought, in 2013 he wrote a novel in Kurmali language called ‘Karam’. The novel created a huge response in the Mahato community.
He also wrote brilliant songs in Kurmali language. In 2014, an album named ‘EgAbar’ was released with 12 songs in Kurmali language with lyrics and music by Ujjal Mahato. Debashish Mahato sang all the songs of that album.
His research book ‘Kanthuen: Mahato Dictionary’ was published at Amar Ekushe Book Fair 2020. The book is available in three languages (Kurmali, Bengali, English). The book is basically a glossary of the Kurmali language. Various topics including traditional and non-traditional words, sentences, rhymes, songs, birth, death and marriage customs of this language have been compiled. Apart from this, the book contains the translation of Bangabandhu’s March 7 historic speech and national anthem in Kurmali language.
