In 33 cases of money embezzlement of Sonali Bank, the innocent Jahalam was identified as the real accused Abu Salek. He was imprisoned for three years from 2016. Jute worker Jahalam of Tangail was released in 2019 on the orders of the High Court after the news of this was published in Prothom Alo.
Later, the High Court bench consisting of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader passed a verdict on September 3, 2020 ordering Jahalom to pay Tk 15 lakh compensation.
According to that judgment, Nireh Jahalom was accused in 33 cases of misappropriation of Sonali Bank’s money. He spent three years in prison without committing a crime and had to lose his job. BRAC Bank official Faisal Kayes played a key role in identifying the innocent Jahalum as the accused instead of the real accused Abu Salek. But this mistake happened because of the investigating officers of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Officials of BRAC Bank and other banks helped mislead them. Again, during the investigation, no official even went to Jahalam’s house. They did not perform their duties properly.
