For years, experts and influencers have talked about the benefits of making your bed every morning, such as a feeling of productivity, stability and organization, but the mattress experts at And So To Bed advise against making the bed for hygiene reasons.
According to experts, the average adult loses 285ml of fluid each night. This means that when you make your bed every morning, you’re trapping all that moisture to compound during the day. It is therefore advisable to pull the bed covers back after a good night’s sleep, especially when the temperature is higher during the summer, to give the mattress a chance to breathe and for the moisture to evaporate. This is because moisture can get trapped between the mattress and the cover, causing discoloration and possibly unpleasant odors. This also ensures that the mattress will last for a longer period, according to the UAE 24 website.
Should you flip your mattress and how often?
In the first three months of getting your mattress, it is recommended to turn it once a week. After that, flip it over only once a month.
Experts also suggest that for the first three months after purchasing a mattress, rotate your mattress from top to bottom once a week. After that, rotate it once a month.
For natural fiber mattresses, experts recommend turning your mattress twice a week for the first three months and once a season after that. This is to preserve the mattress pads and extend their life.
How to clean the mattress
Cleaning the mattress is not an easy task, and it is best left to a professional. However, there are a few mattress cleaning tips that will help extend the life of your mattress, according to the Metro website:
Do not use the vacuum cleaner
It may seem tempting to blow dust and fluff out of your mattress, but the strong suction of a vacuum cleaner can cause the pads to dislodge, which can lead to bulges or voids. Instead, use a soft brush to remove dirt.
Do not rub the spots
Stains should be treated immediately by blotting with a clean cloth. If your mattress is filled with natural fibers, the cloth should be dry, as “wet cleaning” can damage the upholstery.
Wash the mattress protector and upholstery regularly
Wash bed linen every one to two weeks, and wash the mattress protector once a month. Cleaning it regularly will prevent any dirt from seeping through the mattress, keeping it clean for longer.
