The President of Poland became today (22.05.2022) the first foreign leader to deliver a speech with a physical presence in the Ukrainian parliament, after the war that broke out with Russia. Only Ukraine has the right to decide on its future, said – among others – Andrei Duda, addressing the deputies in Kyiv.
Andrei Duda is campaigning for Ukraine to be granted candidate status as soon as possible. “I will not rest until Ukraine becomes a member of the EU,” he said.
“There have been alarming voices saying that Ukraine must back down on Putin’s demands. “Only Ukraine has the right to decide on its future; nothing for you without you,” said Andrei Duda. The international community must demand the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, he added.
It is noted that Kyiv has ruled out the possibility of concluding a peace agreement that would include the concession of territories and has rejected calls for a ceasefire agreement that would provide for the stay of Russian forces in territories occupied by Moscow on the grounds that such a it was just giving time to reorganize its forces.
“If Ukraine is sacrificed for… economic reasons or for political ambitions – even an inch of its territory – it will be a huge blow, not only to the Ukrainian nation, but to the entire Western world,” he said.
It is recalled that the Polish president had visited Kyiv after the outbreak of war in April and had met there with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Upon his return, Duda accused Russia of launching a “total war” in Ukraine. He had visited the country with the presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
