The stagnation has affected the sales of clothing stores, shoes, home appliances and gold jewelry, even though the current time is the season for selling on the occasion of Mother’s Day, according to merchants who spoke to Masrawy.
They said that the rise in prices and the decline in the purchasing power of citizens were among the reasons that caused the recession despite the large discounts offered.
Mother’s Day gifts vary between shoes, a bag, some types of household appliances, clothes, and gold works.
Mahmoud Al-Daour, a member of the clothing division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, said that the clothing sector did not witness sales in stores this year, despite the Mother’s Day season.
Al-Daour added that with regard to ready-made clothes, there is a demand for some mothers’ items, such as “abayas: home, reception, and offering purchases.”
The stores did not witness a great demand this year, although merchants expected an improvement in sales with the extension of the winter sale until Mother’s Day, according to Al-Daour.
There were expectations from clothing merchants that store sales would improve with the approach of Mother’s Day, especially with the Ministry of Supply extending winter sales until March 21.
The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade announced the extension of the winter sale period until March 9-21.
A source in the Shoes Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce said that there is a stagnation in shoe stores sales this year compared to last year’s sales.
Consumers usually buy shoes or a bag as one of the Mother’s Day gifts.
The source – who preferred not to be named – added that although there are discounts on shoes and bags this year, ranging between 40 and 50 percent depending on the piece, the discounts did not succeed in attracting customers to buy.
He stated that last year’s sales of shoes and bags stores were better than this year.
According to a member of the division, shoe and bag stores are putting up offers throughout the year in order to attract customers to buy, indicating that they hope that the buying and selling movement will improve in the coming seasons.
Ahmed Helal, deputy head of the Electrical Appliances Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, said that the approaching Mother’s Day season did not succeed in moving store sales this year.
Hilal added that the demand for purchasing devices and tools was better last year and the year before than this year, noting that the Mother’s Day season during the beginning of the Corona pandemic was better than this year.
And the demand is to buy mixers and tools at low prices, such as cups and trays, of different materials.
Hilal stated that the increase in prices this year could be the reason for the decline in the demand for purchase.
The prices of electrical appliances increased last year by an average of 25% due to the rise in metals on global stock exchanges.
Nadi Naguib, former Secretary General of the Gold Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, said that Mother’s Day did not succeed in stimulating sales of gold shops, despite the fact that merchants were busy with light weights to attract consumers to buy.
According to Naguib, merchants on occasions make light weights to attract customers to buy.
Naguib added that the weight of the gold works ranges between two and three grams, so that the value of the gift becomes between two thousand and three thousand pounds.
Najeeb explained that the gifts are chain charms, lightweight rings, and bracelets.
