Hungarian police said they fired on a truck carrying about 30 people, presumed to be irregular migrants, after passing a checkpoint at the border with Austria without stopping.
Dior-Motion-Sopron County Police said patrols in the border village of Harka spotted the truck moving at high speed toward the crossing.
And she wrote in a statement on her website that an officer came to stand in front of the truck, telling her to stop for an inspection, but she increased her speed instead, forcing him to get out of her way, while a colleague fired shots to try to force the truck to change its direction.
The police indicated that the truck, which had a Hungarian number plate, crossed the border and then broke down. Austrian police arrested its driver, an Egyptian, and about 30 passengers, whose nationalities are not yet known, who were in the trunk of the truck.
According to police data, Hungarian authorities sent back 2,000-2,500 migrants to the country’s southern borders with Serbia and Romania each week in the final weeks of 2021. Hungary built a fence along the border with Serbia to prevent migrants from entering in 2015.
