The German Society of Gastroenterology said that hepatic encephalopathy is a disease that attacks the brain due to the liver’s inability to expel toxins from the body, noting that it affects liver patients in particular.
The association added that the symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy are represented in the emergency changes in the pattern of thinking and sleep pattern, frequent forgetfulness, poor concentration and inability to make decisions, in addition to dizziness, mental dispersion, inability to speak normally, inability to control the movement of the hands and loss of consciousness.
Hepatic encephalopathy is countered by treating infections with antibiotics, detoxing with laxatives, and stopping bleeding in the digestive system, if present.
In order to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, patients with liver disease must continue to take their prescribed medications and perform regular liver function tests, in addition to following a healthy lifestyle based on healthy nutrition and exercise, while quitting smoking and drinking alcohol.
