More than a decade ago, massive demonstrations erupted in Libya, which turned into a war that overthrew Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, and led to the dispersal of his family between death and exile in several countries, including Algeria, Oman, and finally Turkey, which was the destination of his son Al-Saadi.

After more than ten years, the following question comes to mind: What happened to the rest of his family? After the new authorities in Libya approved, a reconciliation project allowed the release of close associates of the late, led by his son Saadi Gaddafi, who was destined for Turkey.

Al-Saadi joins exile abroad, with members of his family, including his mother and sister Aisha, who have lived for years in the Sultanate of Oman, as a second stop after Algeria, where members of the Gaddafi family sought refuge after the outbreak of the 2011 uprising against his rule.

During the “Arab Spring” and after 42 years of unchallenged power, Muammar Gaddafi and his relatives fell in 2011 with a popular uprising, some of whom were killed, some were imprisoned, and some were exiled.

The Libyan revolution, which began in February 2011, came to an end in October of the same year with the killing of Gaddafi, whose fall led to the fall of his relatives, who are major players in the former regime. Three of his sons, Mutassim, Saif al-Arab and Khamis, were killed during the uprising.

The dispersal of the Gaddafi family

Gaddafi’s second wife, Safiya Fargash, with her daughter Aisha and Muhammad Ibn Gaddafi from his first wife, Fathia Khaled, fled the capital, Tripoli, in 2011 to Algeria, which granted them asylum “for humanitarian reasons” before they moved to the Sultanate of Oman.

It was reported that she underwent surgery in Germany in mid-2014. As for Muhammad, 52, who is the only son who was the fruit of the colonel’s first marriage, he resorted to Algeria in 2011, then was granted asylum in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as his sister Aisha, a 45-year-old lawyer. years old.

Hannibal Gaddafi left for Algeria after the fall of his father’s regime, and from there to Oman, where he obtained asylum. He was kidnapped by an unknown armed group in Lebanon at the end of 2015 for a short period before he was released.
He currently lives with his Lebanese wife, former model, Aline Skaf, in the Syrian capital, Damascus, where controversy erupted recently after news of her running over a number of pedestrians, including policemen, in the city center.

Aisha Gaddafi also left for Algeria in 2011, three days after her arrival, gave birth to a baby girl, named Safia after her mother.

During her stay in Algeria, she called, through a Syrian TV channel, for Libyans to “revolt” against the new government.

Reports indicated that she had hired an Israeli lawyer to submit a petition to the International Criminal Court to investigate her father’s death.

Libyan media reported that Aisha, while in Algeria, supported the Algerian national team against the Libyan national football team, saying that the Libyan side “does not represent her.”

After Al-Saadi… the release of Gaddafi’s personal secretary

On Monday, the Libyan Presidential Council announced the release of Ahmed Ramadan, the personal secretary of Muammar Gaddafi.

The announcement of Ramadan’s release comes hours after the release of Saadi Gaddafi, one of Gaddafi’s sons, who had been imprisoned in the capital, Tripoli, since 2014, in implementation of a court ruling dating back years.

In a statement, the Libyan government pledged to work to “release all prisoners, whose legal conditions lead to this,” expressing its hope that these efforts will be directed towards “the path of comprehensive national reconciliation.”

Saadi Gaddafi leaves for Turkey after his release

The Libyan National Unity Government announced that it had directed the release of Al-Saadi Gaddafi, in implementation of the release issued by the Public Prosecution against him two years ago.

In a statement, she stressed that the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government had emphasized that no prisoner could be kept outside the scope of the law and that reconciliation could only be achieved through the administration of justice and compliance with judicial rulings.

Reuters quoted an official Libyan source as saying that Al-Saadi immediately left on a plane bound for Istanbul, Turkey. Meanwhile, local media reported that he would later head to the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

And a photo of Al-Saadi’s passport spread, on which was written: “Departure on a private plane belonging to the Executive Authority of Private Aviation (..) Cairo-Istanbul at 21:45 pm.”

The Libyan National Unity Government had confirmed the release of al-Saadi, who fled to Niger during the NATO-backed uprising, but was extradited to Libya in 2014 and has since been imprisoned in Tripoli.

Al-Saadi Gaddafi, one of the sons of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who had been imprisoned in the capital Tripoli since 2014, was released in implementation of a court ruling dating back years, according to a source from the Ministry of Justice.

The official source said that his release came as a result of negotiations that included prominent tribal figures and Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba. Reuters quoted another source as saying that the negotiations also included former Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha.

A high-ranking source in the Libyan government’s Ministry of Justice refused to comment on Al-Saadi’s departure from Libyan territory, telling AFP: “Al-Saadi is a Libyan citizen who was brought before the judiciary, and the latter issued a release regarding his case, which he was in custody, and therefore he is free to stay or leave the country.”

The Ministry of Justice had said in 2018 that Al-Saadi Gaddafi had been found not guilty of murder, deception, threatening, enslavement and defamation of former player Bashir Al-Riyani.

Last July, the New York Times said it had interviewed Saadi’s brother, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who had been detained for years in the town of Zintan, where his supporters say he will run in the presidential elections scheduled for December.
