The city of Alcanar in northeastern Spain has seen massive damage to homes and businesses as a result of the floods caused by heavy rains that fell on large areas of the country.
Residents expressed their happiness that there were no casualties as a result of the rain, which exceeded more than 250 liters per square meter in the town between midnight and six o’clock yesterday evening, Wednesday.
The rapid flood soon turned the streets into rivers that washed away everything in their path as water washed away many cars and dozens of cars ended up in the Mediterranean, homes and businesses filled with silt, water and debris.
Other parts of central and northern Spain experienced floods on Wednesday, including Madrid. Firefighters used a helicopter to rescue three people who were in grave danger and had to tow more cars that got stuck in the rising waters.
Provincial authorities moved 58 people to hotels, while 16 spent the night on a family in a sports facility, and the authorities had to rescue four people at a nearby camping site that was also badly damaged.
